Every year on November 8, World Town Planning Day rolls around, reminding us of the invaluable role town planning plays in creating the communities we live, work, and thrive in. But this isn’t just a day for town planners to sit back and admire their work. It’s a day for all of us to understand, celebrate, and even challenge the art and science that goes into shaping our urban environments.
World Town Planning Day (or WTPD, as it’s known among planning aficionados) was founded in 1949 by Professor Carlos Maria della Paolera from Argentina. He saw the need to recognise the influence of urban planning on the quality of life and wanted to raise awareness of the global impact of good planning. Della Paolera’s vision was simple yet revolutionary: to create a worldwide event that encouraged everyone to appreciate, understand, and celebrate the crucial role planning plays in our everyday lives.
The celebration has grown from a local initiative to a global observance with countries worldwide taking part. While planning styles and priorities may vary, the objectives remain the same: fostering healthy, sustainable, and liveable environments for all.
Town planning as a formal discipline took shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with pioneers like Sir Ebenezer Howard in the UK and Daniel Burnham in the United States paving the way. Howard, with his concept of the “Garden City,” envisioned balanced communities where housing, green space, and industry could co-exist in harmony. Burnham, with his work on the Chicago Plan, inspired generations of planners to “make no little plans,” pushing for big-picture visions of what cities could be.
Through the 20th century, town planning became more strategic, with planners considering not just the needs of their own generation but also those of future residents. The field has expanded to include not only architecture and urban design but also environmental science, sociology, and, more recently, data science. From green belts and zoning to smart cities and sustainable urbanisation, town planning has had a hand in shaping every facet of our built environment.
In today’s world, planners face new challenges that would have been unimaginable in 1949: climate change, rapid urbanisation, housing affordability, and social equity issues, to name a few. As towns and cities grow, planners are tasked with balancing economic, social, and environmental priorities. With this year’s World Town Planning Day, the focus shifts toward the sustainability-driven agenda, reminding us that the spaces we build must be resilient and adaptable.
Some of the key focus areas for planners today include:
World Town Planning Day gives us a chance to celebrate the visionaries behind our cities and towns who are tirelessly working to create spaces that make life better for all of us. But it’s also a time to recognise that planning is a community effort, dependent on collaboration between professionals, government bodies, and citizens.
By understanding and supporting the work of town planners, we’re investing in a future that’s sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.
Here’s to the planners who make our towns and cities work. Their thoughtful designs, hard work, and dedication shape the environments we live in. This World Town Planning Day, let’s celebrate the history, the progress, and the people behind the plans that build a better future for all.
Happy World Town Planning Day!
